My husband has been involved in a war with privet since the very first day we moved onto this property. It is an invasive species, and Dylan has very little tolerance for invasive plants.
Last year, he cut/mowed/mutilated/chopped every piece of privet he could find. He kept the masses of it down on our property by manpower alone. He even had a machete that even our son called, "The Privet Killer". It was a constant fight.
This spring, he's at it again. I was in the house today with the babies and I hear (even FEEL) this rumbling...sort of like someone bouncing a very big basketball...in the kitchen. After about 30 minutes of this, I go outside to investigate.
Dylan has decided that since cutting the privet isn't working, he's going to take out all the roots. He was digging roots and then chopping and pulling them out of the ground..in the hopes that they won't come back. The biggest one he found today was 15 inches in diameter.
I told him the whole property must just have a huge network of privet root right under the surface, considering the sound it was making in the house. He didn't like that very much at all and continued on with his personal war.
Honestly, I don't think he can ever get rid of all of it...but he seems to disagree. And if he does, our neighbors all have privet....but don't tell Dylan that.
Dylan and Harmony, whichever of us have the time to sit down and write for a few minutes. : )
