Confession....I hate cold weather. This is not a big confession if you know me well. If you don't know me well, you are probably wondering why I ever agreed to move to Maine. Ha!!
I actually LOVE seasons, all of them, just the colder ones from the comfort of my preferably (very) warm home. I love snow.....if I don't have to touch it.
Dylan, on the other hand, LOVES cold, northern climates and has jumped right back into it with open arms.
We tend to work together really well. For instance, I love burning wood in the wood stove, and Dylan really enjoys splitting and cutting wood (or at least he loves it to be finished, so he does it really well....and fast). Another great example; I very much dislike deep snow in places I have to walk (although I love deep snow in other areas...as long as I don't have to walk in it). Dylan LOVES shoveling snow. See how it works out? And that's only a few examples.
The kids are very much enjoying their first Maine winter. Kade (our oldest) lived in Madison, WI for 4 years of his life, and has very much missed snow and cold the 4 years we lived in Louisiana. The two little ones have lived in Louisiana all of their lives (we moved there when Eilah was only 3 months old). All of the kids LOVE the snow...and the ice rink Dylan built...and just being out in it in general. It is pretty impressive, actually. Luckily, the did not inherit my southern blood...as they have the ability to stay warm and have fun.
I take them out to play in the snow during the day, and skate on the ice rink. There are rules...like "no throwing snowballs at mommy!" and "don't go too fast when i'm holding your hand on the ice because I WILL fall!". They have taken to these rules pretty well, and all in all, we have had a great first few months in the snow and cold!
Tomorrow's high will be something like 16 degrees. Not very excited about that. But I AM excited about the wood stove, and tons of wood outside.....and the e
Winter is fun for a lot of reasons (like playing hockey with the kids and building snow forts)……but one of the most fun things about winter is planning for the next years ventures.
This coming season will be an eventful one at 47 Daisies!! Aside from the kickoff of vegetable, berry and egg sales from the farm and CSA and farmers markets, we will also be doing some MAJOR plantings to prepare for years to come.
We have finalized our order for spring planting of the first 1000 Christmas trees, apples, peaches, plums, cherries, pears, grapes, raspberries and horseradish!! The seed potato order is in as well with four varieties coming our way in mid-April!!!
Next up…..seeds, asparagus, blueberries, rhubarb, artichokes…..!! The list goes on and on.
Can’t wait for spring.......but for now I’m enjoying winter….8-12inches of snow coming on Sunday! Perfect excuse to peruse those seed catalogs.
As I acclimate back to a northern climate after having been in the south for the past four years, it is not just the temperature and precipitation that I need to acclimate to. It is an entire mindset, or is it?
In Louisiana, I could grow 4 seasons, 365 days a year. We relied very little on canned goods and frozen veggies. We did some canning and definitely froze some as well, but usually we were eating fresh. Now, back in a northern climate, my growing season is 180 days (if I’m lucky) and we are already eating mostly frozen and canned goods (as veggies go).
While this is not necessarily a problem, it does bring about a sense of anxiety for me.......and boredom! Harmony gets on me all the time and says “why can’t you just relax, you don’t have to be doing something all the time!” But, my response to her is always…..yes, I do.
When we lived inWisconsin, my winters consisted of picking up new hobbies (along with old) to pass the winter (baking, quilting, knitting, sewing, building sledding stadiums, snow forts, reading, woodworking, rearranging the house furniture, etc.). But now (along with all of the previously mentioned winter hobbies) I have four months to plan and dream and scheme how I can make that 180 turn into 365!! I’ll let you know what I come up with!!
Dylan and Harmony, whichever of us have the time to sit down and write for a few minutes. : )
