October 24th is National Food Day, start planning your celebration now!! The purpose of Food Day is to push for healthy, affordable food produced in a sustainable, humane way. We are all about this celebration! :)
The six food day principles are:
-Reduce diet related disease by promoting safe, healthy foods
-Support sustainable farms and limit subsidies to big agribusiness
-Expand access to food and alleviate hunger
-Protect the environment and animals by reforming factory farms
-Promote health by curbing junk-food marketing to kids
-Support fair conditions for food and farm workers
There are big and small ways to celebrate this day and start to make a difference. Small ways would be to plan a local, sustainable meal. A great way to get started with this would be with our produce! :) If you aren't already on the list for the current week by week CSA, email us! You could also buy fair trade coffee as opposed to the big name brands. Plan to cut out junk food for the week to promote healthy eating.
Larger ways to become involved and celebrate could be organizing a dinner and invite friends to join! Spreading the word is a great place to start a movement. Talk to your child's school about serving healthier foods on their lunch menu...or talk to your favorite restaurant about purchasing foods locally.
The possibilities are endless!! Comment here or on Facebook (or both) about how you plan to celebrate Food Day! We look forward to your ideas.
