So we officially hit 107 degrees the last two days in a row.....no surprise that July was the hottest month on record EVER in multiple cities around the country. We here are breaking daily records almost every day and the "Great drought of 2011" is now effecting a whopping 32% of the lower 48 states. This is unprecedented.....never before been seen.....not even the dustbowl of the 1930s was this bad.
Needless to say, the heat and the drought are REALLY hard on crops. But this is not why I am writing this post. On top of all the bad things happening in the beds due to this record breaking season we are having......the raccoons are hurting as well. As a result they are hitting EVERY patch of melons I have planted......I assume because melons are full of water and there is NO water anywhere else in all of northern Louisiana!!! I have tried everything to keep this varmint out of the patches and nothing will stop them....not electric fence, chicken wire, etc.......
So I broke down and bought a catch and release trap......should be interesting......we will keep you posted. Tonight will be the first night the trap gets set. Hopefully it will be a short-lived trapping experience.
So enjoy those melons while we have them because if the raccoon cannot be stopped they won't be around for long.
Dylan and Harmony, whichever of us have the time to sit down and write for a few minutes. : )
