We have applied for funding through the USDA Organic Initiative administered by the NRCS to add a high tunnel to our operations here at 47 Daisies! The engineer was out yesterday to inspect our potential site, and everything seems to be moving forward!
We hope to build the high tunnel as early as this summer, for use this fall and winter.
The high tunnel is 30 ft wide by 96 ft long...and 12 ft tall. IT'S HUGE. And we're actually considering getting 2.
This will allow us to grow all year.
Dylan's been working like crazy in the bottom down behind the barn clearing a small grove of sweet gums. Already, I think we have enough firewood for the next two years, and he said today that he's "almost 1/2 way done". That's good for us...just in case we have "Wisconsin" winter next year. :)
I've already thought of several awesome ideas for the high tunnel in winter...like hanging out in there and letting the kids play. It will be like spring time in the high tunnel! I also mentioned having family come for a visit in the winter and they could all pitch a tent in there. The weather would be perfect. Dylan tolerates these ideas...but in reality..they will be tilled and planted for all year harvesting.
We're very excited and will keep you posted on the developments!
Dylan and Harmony, whichever of us have the time to sit down and write for a few minutes. : )
