I was outside tonight turning compost piles while Dylan got the babies to sleep. It actually rained today, so it was too wet to get in the beds and do anything else. I actually love working with compost. I can't really explain it. Something to do with turning over new soil and making something from scrap, maybe? I have no idea. But I love it.
Well, tonight was not that great. It has been so dry and the compost piles are suffering a little because of that....and because we've been so busy. Compost piles need a lot of moisture to work....and that hasn't been happening. They also need to be turned at least once a week..and that really hasn't been happening either. So tonight, I was working on a REALLY DRY compost pile that hasn't been turned in about 3-4 weeks. So the process goes something like; turn a portion of the pile into a new pile, then spray for a minute or two with a water hose to really soak it down so it will actually be a working compost pile. The first spray of the water hose produced HUGE spiders coming form every direction. Literally.....every direction. (Don't worry CSA people, this is not the pile we ask you to put your compost in on Saturdays!!! That one is PROBABLY spider free....just don't investigate.) It's a good thing I'm not scared of them, and it's a good thing they don't jump. Every turn of the pile and new spray of the water hose created more spiders running from the chaos. It was pretty entertaining after the shock of the first round. After that, at least I knew it was a possibility gigantic spiders would be running at my feet and crawling over the toe of my boot.
I say I'm not scared of spiders, but I have to admit that I really freak out if one is actually on me...or I think it is. So as I'm typing this I'm wondering if one happened to get in my boot and up my pant leg, and I swear I can feel it crawling around in there. Hopefully I'm wrong. But forgive me for cutting this blog short. :)
Dylan and Harmony, whichever of us have the time to sit down and write for a few minutes. : )
